Letter of Interest…

Our names are Jillian Herrmann and Kate Chandler and we are interested in creating a mural for the Art in the Alley project in our hometown. We would like to take a few paragraphs to tell you a little bit about our artistic backgrounds, and how we plan to blend our different styles together to create an engaging piece of art that will beautify and lift the wonderful downtown alleyways of Elkader.

Jillian:

I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007. For over a decade, I’ve made it my mission to create high quality, original, one-of-a-kind artwork that is accessible to all. From small 2x3 inch originals sold through the art-o-mat project all over the world, to a 4x4 ft. painting commissioned by Crossing Rivers Health in our neighboring town of Prairie du Chien, WI, I make art in a variety of sizes. My acrylic paintings have spanned as large as 6x3 feet and I would be honored to paint a bold, mural sized, public art piece for Elkader.

My husband and I moved to northeast Iowa from North Carolina in the fall of 2013. I immediately fell in love with this small-town life, the charm, and the community. I have always been impressed with the amount of businesses, eclectic shops, restaurants, and quality of life this beautiful corner of Iowa has to offer and I’m thrilled to see the wonderful support of the arts in our community.

Kate:

I graduated from Missouri Southern State University with a B.A. in Studio Art focusing in ceramics and sculpture. I have also studied on the graduate level in ceramics at Montana State University and Wichita State University. Currently I hold a job as an artist with a studio that makes public art out of clay. Within the studio, we strive to tie place, history and community together through visual art.

I was born and raised in Elkader and have always known that the town is special and unique. My favorite parts of Elkader are the tiny river that can take you on big adventures, towering bluffs that feel like mountains, and the tight-knit community of people who watch out for one another. It’s no surprise to me that Elkader has become a destination for shopping, river activities, and reprieve from the fast city life.

For both of us it has always been important to give back to our community through our artistic talents. From organizing Art in the Park and exhibiting our work in local shops and galleries, we have worked hard to instill the importance of art and how it can elevate individuals and communities.

While our mediums and approaches are different, we feel it would be a fun and unique challenge to combine our two styles, creating a piece that speaks to what we love about this awesome town. Both of us appreciate the many attributes that sets Elkader apart from other small towns; the landscape, the community, and the many opportunities that one can experience within it.

We are excited to apply for the opportunity to add an exciting new facet to Elkader, one that will hopefully speak to the brilliance that embodies Elkader.

Jillian’s Artist Statement:

A North Carolina native, I earned my B.F.A. in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I became fascinated by the study of color, abstraction, and conceptual art.  The works of Hans Hofmann, Edvard Munch, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, among others, have all influenced my painting style and technique.   The level of abstraction ranges from complete to loosely representational. Texture and color are key elements used to develop mood, creating depth and interest in these abstract atmospheres.

Using the fundamental elements of art and a vigorous painting process, I create art that incites a visceral response. Whether creating a space for calm escape or a tumultuous storm, my intention is to evoke an emotional reaction and recognition within the viewer. Viewers often attempt to “see imagery” in a painting, but I create artwork that encourages the viewer to feel. Emotions are universal, and much like a song or smell, art can transport a person to certain place in their own personal history.

Kate’s Artist Statement:

I am interested in maps. How they show journey, path, growth and change. I like the symbols they use to represent characteristic and attribute. I am interested in landscape because of how it contains layers, stories, lessons, and secrets. It is one huge living organism that lives and feels as the human body does. I am interested in the relationships visually and symbolically between maps, landscape and human anatomy. When I layer images together sometimes they tell a story, sometimes they ask a question, always they relate. Are they roots, or veins? Is it a river, or an artery?

Estimated Budget Materials:

Our budget will depend on the project selected. While open to other brands of paint, we’ve selected a handful of key colors from the Golden brand that are rated I or excellent for lightfastness and would more than likely be used in the mural or panel application. We would plan to prepare the wall or panels with primer before painting. A more detailed budget can be determined after project selection.
