/A Fall Wedding Day to Remember | The Ockenfels Wedding | Manchester, Iowa
If you’re dreaming of a fall wedding filled with golden light, sentimental details, and Midwest charm, Alex and Bethany’s day in Manchester, Iowa, is pure inspiration. As a northeast Iowa wedding photographer, I can’t help but love when a couple’s story and surroundings blend so perfectly — from their Catholic church ceremony to golden hour portraits at Backbone State Park and a joyful reception in Edgewood. Every part of this day captured the heart of Northeast Iowa in the fall and the joy of the Ockenfels first day as husband and wife.
When it comes to fall weddings in Northeast Iowa, Alex and Bethany’s day was one to remember. On October 18, 2025, these two became Mr. and Mrs. Ockenfels surrounded by family, friends, and the most beautiful golden light you could dream of.
The morning began at a charming Airbnb just a few minutes from the church, where the bride and her bridesmaids had their hair and makeup done by Lexi Boge (Envy Salon) and Hannah (Riverview). We snuck in to capture those last few finishing touches — the girls in their matching PJs, laughter filling the room, and the quiet hum of anticipation that always fills a wedding morning.
After photographing the thoughtful details including some of the most beautiful stationery by Iron Leaf Press, we packed up our gear and headed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester to catch the guys walking in like it was game day. With Alex and his crew being athletes, it couldn’t have been a more fitting moment — confident, full of energy, and ready for the big event!
Inside, the girls got ready in a room filled with incredible stained glass windows. Once Bethany was buttoned into her gown from Brides and Weddings (Manchester), with her veil and shoes helped by her mom and sisters, she shared a beautiful moment with them before a first look with her best friends. The reactions were priceless — pure joy seeing their beautiful bride all ready to walk down the aisle.
Before the ceremony, Bethany and Alex shared one of the most touching parts of the day — a first touch and prayer on either side of the church doorway. They wanted their first official look to be traditional on the aisle, but this quiet exchange was such a sweet way to slow down and center themselves. They exchanged gifts, and Alex prayed over his bride and their marriage — an incredibly emotional and heartfelt moment that they will cherish.
Next came the first look with her dad and brothers, right outside in front of the glowing fall foliage. It was the perfect spot for some family portraits and later, the wedding party photos after the ceremony.
There were so many thoughtful touches woven throughout the day — from the groom and groomsmen’s fun socks and fabric pocket squares to the powerful moment when the groomsmen gathered to pray over Alex by the riverside. Every element, right down to the hand-painted cake plate made by the couple, reflected how intentional and meaningful this celebration was.
After a beautiful ceremony, guests cheered as the couple exited the church under flowing streamer wands, the breeze catching each one perfectly. The wedding party made a quick stop at Riverbend Bar, celebrating with champagne, shots, and a stunning river backdrop — the very same place where Alex and Bethany took their first photo together the day they met. (Yes, seriously. The full-circle moment was perfection.)
Before heading to the reception, we took a short drive with the newlyweds to the beach for some golden hour portraits. With colorful fall trees, calm water, and a setting sun, it couldn’t have been more magical. They danced on the beach, laughed, and soaked in those first few moments as husband and wife.
The celebration continued at the Edgewood Event Center, where the room was glowing with twinkle lights, laughter, and so much love. Dinner was delicious, and the DJ from Boogie Tyme (Bill Stock) kept everyone entertained with a fun idea — playing couples’ first dance songs while tables were released to the buffet. It was such a sweet touch, and honestly, a must-try for any couple planning their reception!
The toasts were heartfelt and hilarious, the dance floor stayed full all night, and the entire evening was a beautiful reflection of who Alex and Bethany are together — joyful, kind, and absolutely meant to be.
And believe it or not, these two actually met at Bethany’s matron of honor’s wedding! They were paired to walk down the aisle together, and Bethany knew right away there was something special about Alex. Later that day, when they stopped by Riverbend Bar for a quick drink and a photo, history was made — and the rest led to this incredible day.
Alex and Bethany, your love story truly feels like a Hallmark movie in the making. I’m so thankful we got to be part of your day — to capture your story, your people, and your joy. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Ockenfels!
We can’t wait to share your full gallery and highlight film soon, but until then, enjoy this little preview of your best day ever.
With love,
Jillian
