The McGreal Wedding | An Intimate Family Farm Wedding + Volga Opera House Reception in Northeast Iowa

There was something incredibly special about the quietness of the McGreal wedding day.

An intimate celebration surrounded by family, held at their family farm, a beautiful gathering of the people who mattered most. Every detail felt personal, intentional, and completely reflective of who they are as a couple.

When I arrived, the farm was peaceful. The windows were open, the fields were blowing gently in the wind, and Kait was in the living room having her hair done by Darcy Moser, who happens to be one of the Bride’s close relatives. There was no rush. Just the comfortable rhythm of family beginning to arrive and the excitement slowly building throughout the house.

Jacob had spent part of the morning gathering flowers for Kait's bouquet, handpicking the blooms and putting the bouquet together himself. He also gathered flowers for the reception tables. There was something so incredibly sweet about knowing that some of the flowers surrounding them throughout the day had been chosen and arranged by the groom himself.

Outside, the weathered barn made the perfect backdrop for the ceremony. Family members found their seats, little ones ran around, and the family pup happily played fetch with the kids while everyone gathered.

And then there were all the little details that made the day feel so unmistakably theirs.

My vintage styled video camera and Polaroids added a nostalgic touch to their day. Queen Anne's lace growing throughout the fields became the backdrop for some of my favorite portraits. The bride's son's suit and the groom’s attire, completely unplanned, somehow matched perfectly. It was one of those little details that felt almost too perfect to have happened by coincidence.

Music played as the Bride’s dad and son walked her down to meet her groom.

Their vows were written in their own words, humble and heartfelt. Just honest promises between two people who know exactly who they are and who they are choosing to build their life with.

During the ceremony, they incorporated handfasting, an ancient Celtic ritual where a couple's hands are bound together with a cord or ribbon to symbolize their union and commitment. The couple’s rope was made by Jacob. Another meaningful detail woven into a day already filled with pieces of their story.

After their intimate ceremony, the extended families gathered at the gorgeous Volga Opera House for the reception. The space was elegant and cozy, with the main areas filled with beautiful floral arrangements by the Volga Opera House owner. The reception tables decorated with the precious wildflower bouquets Jacob had gathered, elegant lighting, and votives in mason jars.

The playlist was selected by the bride and the music was provided by their friend Ashley Althoff. An incredible meal was prepared by Chef Jacqueline Fettkether. It was amazing. I'm already dreaming up some kind of event I can pull together to have her cater it for me.

Fresh fruit decorated the cake by Cakes by Glenda, and ice cream was served to a room filled with family and friends. It felt warm, relaxed, and completely full of pure joy.

While I am typically meeting couples for the first time during engagement sessions and then getting to know them more deeply on their wedding day, this one was different.

Kait has been a dear friend of mine for many years, so being there to document this chapter of her life felt incredibly special. And the minute I met Jacob, I knew. Within about ten seconds of knowing him, I knew he was her absolute perfect match.

Knowing them made this day even more meaningful to me because everything about it felt so true to who they are.

It was calm. It was thoughtful. It was beautiful.

It was family gathered around a weathered barn. Queen Anne's lace blowing in the fields. A bouquet chosen and made by the groom. Records playing. A brother on the keyboard while a bride walked toward her groom. Family members performing the service - officiating, reading, and playing music, handwritten vows filled with humble words and love. A Celtic knot made with rope crafted by the groom. Wildflowers gathered from the farm. Music from a friend. Good food. Cake and ice cream. And a room full of people who clearly love these two.

One of my favorite images from the entire day...  the couple dancing as sunlight poured through the windows of the Opera House.

I still can't get over how perfectly this day reflected Kait and neighbor Jake.

And I will always cherish that our little family was included in the celebration and that I got to stand behind my camera and preserve such a beautiful piece of their story. The McGreal wedding was the kind of day that reminds me why I love what I do.
